Closed Loop Control of Titanium Dioxide Production Using Process Raman Spectroscopy

The production of titanium dioxide via the sulphate process entails high temperature calcination of an amorphous pulp for extended time periods to produce a mixture of rutile and anatase. The ratio of rutile to anatase must be carefully controlled in order to optimise final product properties, and this requires rapid measurement of anatase at the 0-5% level. A solution based on process Raman analysis is described, which replaced a labour-intensive measurement using offline XRD (sampling frequency 2 per hour) with fully automated feedback every few seconds, with better precision than the XRD results. These installations were implemented at several sites in Europe and Africa and have been running successfully for more than 10 years, having made major improvements in product quality and throughput.

In this webinar, the engineering and spectroscopic approaches taken to rapidly analyse hot powder in a difficult environment are described, covering both initial feasibility studies and the final installation. Comments will be made on how the installations might differ if this project were being carried out today, given the advances in instrumentation and probe technology that have occurred in the last 10 years.
