Application of Raman Spectroscopy for Pharmaceutical Process Understanding
Since the creation of the Process Analytical Technology (PAT) initiative, spectroscopic techniques such as Raman and NIRS are becoming very popular in the pharmaceutical industry. Both are fast, non-invasive techniques that can provide large amounts of physical and chemical information regarding the sample in question. NIRS based pharmaceutical analytical methods have advanced more rapidly than Raman based ones. The underdevelopment of Raman techniques when compared to NIRS has been attributed to three main factors: instrumental complexity, under-representative sampling and fluorescence. Nevertheless, with advances in lasers and accompanying electronics, many of the hurdles in the implementation of Raman spectroscopy as a sensor for pharmaceuticals processes and product understanding have been overcome.

In this presentation we will discuss some examples of Raman spectroscopy for pharmaceutical products and process understanding along with simple strategies for the implementation of the technique. Recommendations in sampling techniques depending on the manufacturing process platform will also be discussed.
