Raman Spectroscopy in Polymer Applications from Laboratory Discoveries to Large-Scale Production
The manufacturing of polymers is one of the largest segments in the chemical industry, with polystyrene alone produced in the billions of kilograms per year worldwide. As performance demands on polymeric materials have increased, polymerization processes have become more complex and often require tighter control of process parameters. Enabling mega volume processes that can consistently make a quality product safely have increased the demand for faster process analytical technologies (PAT) that enhance real-time, closed-loop process control. Raman spectroscopy offers a non-invasive, non-destructive method to measure polymer chemical composition and molecular structure. These features of Raman have been exploited in many polymer applications, ranging from commercial polymer manufacturing to laboratory synthesis. As a process analytical instrument, an on-stream Raman analyzer can be used in qualitative and quantitative analyses to improve process knowledge, enable in-process corrections, and safely measure reactions. In this webinar, we will present Raman applications in polymers including polymerization blending, density, crystallinity, and copolymer content.
