Kaiser Optical Systems Inc. introduced the AirHead™ process Raman probe for gas-phase monitoring and control at Pittcon 2008.
The AirHead™ has been specifically designed to meet the requirements associated with gas and vapor phase in situ process Raman monitoring and is compatible with Kaiser’s suite of 532-nm RAMANRXN SYSTEMS™ analyzers. The basic AirHead™ probe features Kaiser’s patented multipass approach to enhancing sample signal-to-noise ratios and improves the analyzer’s limit of detection.
“The AirHead™ allows us to use Raman spectroscopy to measure industrially important gases such as diatomics, including nitrogen and fluorine, SOx, COx, and hydrocarbons. The ability to measure oxygen concentration for safety purposes also appears possible,” said Ian Lewis, marketing manager at Kaiser.
Sampling versatility and materials compatibility are critical factors for process applications. Process materials compatibility is optimized by using sapphire, stainless steel, Teflon, and glass-like “wet-able” components. The design of the AirHead™ probe is compatible with installations in classified environments by using hermetically sealed internal probe volumes and a low-profile ultra thin Teflon window seal.
The AirHead™ probe can be directly inserted into processes with temperatures and pressures up to 100 degrees Celsius and 650 psi and mounted using either standard NPT fittings or compression fittings. Alternatively the AirHead™ probe can be mounted into a gas slip-stream using a Kaiser-supplied easy-plumb sampling cell.
“Our customers tell us that mounting in a slip stream can be important for certain processes as this allows them to apply stream conditioning approaches prior to the measurement point,” said Lewis.
“The ability to measure gas-phase processes in real time and in situ opens up a new market for our current RAMANRXN SYSTEMS™ analyzers. Initial customer feedback to this product has been promising,” said Joe Slater, engineering manager at Kaiser.
