Catalysts are important compounds that can modify a reaction pathway. These materials can lead to an alternative pathway for the reaction that may prove to be cheaper, of higher yield, or more selective than the normal pathway.

Raman spectroscopy is an established tool for studying catalysts. Raman can be used in situ and in real time to provide molecular level information on the synthesis of novel catalysts or catalyst supports, the characterization of catalysts, to provide an understanding of the kinetics of transformation at the catalyst site, and to provide information that can lead to an understanding of the catalytic action and thus the reaction pathway.
